Last Sunday in a publication of “La Tercera”, in its section “Trends” appeared an article referred to “Young people’s new organizations in their universities”. Young people don’t feel attracted to student groups either formal or informal. Some people allege a continuous repression for part of executives, others administrative assistants. To know what happens with them? I talked with “Aguilas” group leader Rodrigo Pérez, who is a Christian and an active member of his group, since its beginnings, he talks with us from the other trench, the trench of participative youth.
Rodrigo thanks for accepting this invitation to analyze this important matter for student circles.
– When did the group be born?
– Well Aguilas was born a long time ago, 1 year and half, more or less, but the group carries 5 years working with student of different universities; Catholics, Christians and Lays.
– Which are the activities that you carry out in the meetings?
– Look, they are spiritual essentially. There is a brief ceremony, where we join to sing, read the bible and pray. We share our love for God and search spirituality in a common place where most of the people are not amiable with our beliefs.
– What do you mean?
– Well, in some universities guys cannot express their beliefs freely, for different causes, for that reason Aguilas born as juvenile group in universities.
– People from different religions?
– Yes, of course, here, everybody is invited to participate.
– Interesting, but what do you think about the rest of young people that are discouraged?
– I think that people need to accept God like their only savior, God is love, love for the other ones, if you have love in your heart, God’s love, you can conceive acts of love.
– Acts of love? How do you do that?
- Look, when you accept God as your savior, you see God’s work from another point of view, because every day you see people suffering, people with needs. You can open yourself to stare society out, and from there you can do something to ease the pain of your brother and sister.
– Can we say that student groups are crucial for the community?
– In fact, I think that, because they depend on socioeconomic context where your university is inserted. Is there where you must act; sometimes is not the way, like what pedagogy in English does every year when they go to visit homeless children or seniors. This is in other towns, but the activity improves some lives of some needy group in this society.
– Where is that?
– It is in San Carlos near Chillán in a foster home.
– If they do well, why do universities don’t support them?
– Universities are always in constant strikes, for different kinds of demands, but, a question, who are behind of those protests? They are students of several informal groups. Rectors don’t believe in them as competent organisms.
– Should they believe in their students?
– Yes, sure, it should be so, because likewise society produces its own changes, good changes, where people are able to help somebody else.
Rodrigo, again, I want to say thank you for accepting this invitation to talk about an interesting topic.
